The Chandos label has issued some fine recordings of classic film music, and this release featuring scores by Miklós Rózsa is especially nice. The BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba outdoes itself the MediaCity sound is superb and the notes by Andrew Knowles are unusually detailed. But the real attraction is the music of Rózsa himself, which is well represented by these four scores that cover a two-decade period. The film offers an affectionate, slightly parodic look at Sherlock Holmes, and draws a distinction between the real Holmes and the character portrayed by Watson in his stories for The Strand magazine. It stars Robert Stephens as Holmes and Colin Blakely as Doctor Watson. Miklos Rosza conducts selections from his best known film scores - a collection originally released in vinyl LP format. Even with the recent DVDBlu-ray release of the superbly restored film El Cid, Rosza's excellent score goes wanting for a proper release. These scores could easily have been extended in great modern yet classic scores as Rozsa demonstrates in his Spellbound concerto added as a bonus on this CD. Miklos Rosza was one of the giants of movie history. His music brought to life several of the biggest movies of all time. This is a wonderful taste of his compositions at a great price. Read more
