The 1 14-minute-long third track, Fools Gold, dispels any doubts the listener might have concerning Carroll's skills as an axe-man. This short piece serves as a blistering guitar intro to the fourth track, Working Man's Blues, a muscular, blues-tinged rocker reminiscent of Lynard Skynard at their heaviest. Rex Carroll. album is called That Was Then, This Is Now and it takes the genres of Southern Rock and Hard Rock further, and in a way that is truly a legacy to all that the greats such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet and others started and originally brought to us, even bringing to mind a newer band called Preacherstone. The album should not be labeled simply as Southern Rock though, that would be too easy and a cop out in this case. This IS Rock in every good and acceptable sense of the term for the genre. Clive Davis of Arista Records heard it and picked it to be the Monkees' comeback single and theme of their 20th Anniversary Tour in 1986.
