I started the group when I first moved to New York and completed our last record, The Echo of Pleasure, shortly before my daughter was born and I moved to Princeton, NJ. From that time forward, I never really felt the same - and the music I was creating didnt the same either. This is good, both for my heart and my music. I know some of you equate PAINS with a particular lineup of people, but Ive always felt that whoever I collaborated with has been the real band, because what animated the music was so consistent. Throughout its nine songs, The Echo Of Pleasure balances the complex shadings between lust and sensuality, blissful devotion and messy accumulation of regret. On Anymore, he exposes his own flaws, and ruminates on whether he can live up to others' expectations: Don't need to be told what I'll never be, anymore, he asserts. Across its previous records, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart toggled from the lo-fi shoegaze of its self-titled debut to the stormy distorted heft of Belong to the nimble indie pop the band is now best known for. With The Echo Of Pleasure, Pains reshapes its sonic palette once more. Full Review. With Berman as the central mastermind, and a well honed studio sound that harks back to the 1980s The Echo Of Pleasure is an accurate and at times enjoyable listen, but one cant help but hark back to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart line up from 2009 and that ramshackle raw, C-86 sound that so excited. Full of gleaming exteriors, the latest album from the Pains of Being Pure at Heart is essentially a solo outing from frontman Kip Berman, who was on the brink of fatherhood when he wrote it. He got married in 2014, shortly after the release of that years Days of Abandon. And much of Pleasure was recorded just at the onset of Bermans wifes third trimester, the point at which shit tends to get particularly real. From the initial rush to the all-too-familiar crash, the Pains have spent the better part of a decade charting the highs and lows of young love. But Berman, like many of us, isnt quite so young anymore
