It's hard to imagine a band that abhors a long, throat-clearing windup more than The New Pornographers. The New Pornographers' first album, Mass Romantic, came out all the way back in 2000 - and Newman was making nifty power-pop records with Zumpano for years prior to that - so the band would be forgiven for receding into legacy-act status at some point. Instead, its catalog just gets more formidable: now seven albums strong, with as little patience for filler as ever. The New Pornographers seventh album is a peppy team effort, rich with new wave synths and closely blended harmonies. Its their first LP without Dan Bejar, and lacks his stranger inklings. Its Case who brings out the playful core of Whiteout Conditions. The groups last record, 2014s Brill Bruisers-a brisk, dance-pop nod to the Brill Building-was a turning point for Cases role in the band. Calling the New Pornographers' music smart pop almost underestimates the group there's smart, and then there's these folks, whose cleverness suggests their tunes got their undergrad degree at Yale and did their master's at Harvard. But A. Newman and his crew also have a keen understanding of the mindbody conundrum - they want their music to be as intelligent as they are, but they also want it to feel good
