Moogura
I gave the Moody Blues one more chance with Seventh Sojourn, yet found myself walking in a musical world that I could not relate to. Yes, it all felt vaguely familiar, like a lysergic dream I’d once had, though each time I attempted to pick up even one song from this album, it slipped though my fingers like sand, where the memory of what once was shone more brightly than my expectations for a future with new Moody Blues material.

If The Moody’s paralleled any other great psychedelic band from those hazed glory days of the mid 60’s, it was Pink Floyd, but the Moody’s simply seemed to have lost their way, or perhaps run out of things to say, having released seven albums in five years, albums that would stand in as my nocturnal tour guide for more inwardly directed nights than I care to fathom.

With the Moody Blues, it was always about the details, the small treasures and secret messages that woven in and out of each outing, and here, Seventh Sojourn was the ‘eight’ for what I can only refer to as their core albums, so it was oddly named, especially with their ‘ninth’ being titled Octave. Where if memory serves me correctly, this is due to the fact that The Moody’s never considered their 1965 release of The Magnificent Moodies to be part of this collection and they style of music was entirely different, along with differing personnel … yet all of that is still ripe for debate.

As to the music, while there’s probably no resoundingly great song to be found on Seventh Sojourn, there’s really not a bad one either, where if anything, what’s delivered is consistent Moody Blues, filled with flutes, mellotron, and strangely enough, or perhaps prophetically so, there are but two sonically driven guitar songs. “I’m Just A Singer In A Rock n’ Roll Band” sets the pace and fashion for the album, revealing a more personal physical presence for the band. Gone was the attitude of The Moody’s standing apart, nearly faceless, delivering sonic voyages, as for some reason here, they seemed to feel the need to bring in the actuality of their beings. Other songs present an attitude of bleakness, while in the same breath giving hope for the future, though all of this stands in sharp contrast to the vast expansion of all things loving and pleasant on earlier albums. Even the album art lacks dynamic imagery, mystery, or anything to be revealed. This vast barren desert depicted on the cover implies a feeling of being lost, of caution, lacking the vast expansive nature of the other albums, where the artwork was every bit as important as the music, to be looked at, pondered and filled with hidden gems. So, with that in mind, why should one think that The Moody Blues are doing anything less here with the restrained landscape; showing listeners what house within.

Few people will outrightly say that they don’t like the album, though they will go on to describe it as being a mature album. To me that suggest that the album represents a band who’ve come to terms with who they are, and when a person or a band does that, they’ve stopped experimenting and are happy to roll out material that says who they are, and not who they wish to become.

Sonically the music sounds off to me, both unclear and uncertain, leaving me wanting to suggest that it’s muddy, though that’s not actually true … perhaps I’m just in need of more actual instruments than are found here. The delivery also comes across with the feel of being crowded and confined, with all of that leading to a grouping of pop songs that are rather ill defined and lacking a visionary spark to set them apart. Add to that the concept of the album following the shadows of The Beatles in many aspects, as if The Moody’s have perhaps listened to “A Day In The Life” and “Rain” far too often, with those concepts filtering over into their work.

Texture has always been a mainstay of The Moody’s, where to create a great texture, especially in the vein the Moody’s set out to do, one must deeply consider both the lyrical and the music. Yet here, the music and they lyrics don’t mesh with the same sense of being … leaving either the lyrics to be to flowery and flowing, or the music to simply lack a responsive nature to those words, with those two aspects nearly traveling parallel to each other though the entire production, where in so doing, the seduction that once embrace this great band is not diminished, it’s simply not there.

Of course, every band is entitle to lose their way from time to time, and I feel that I’m being unfair to this massive orchestration, though both Every Good Boy Deserves Favors and Seventh Sojourn went somewhere else for me. So rather than thinking of The Moody Blues as failing, let me suggest that like any comet streaking across the sky, once that comet enters earth’s atmosphere, it can do nothing but burn up. And this of course is what happened with The Moody Blues, they thought that they could end their touchdown sojourns, stand on terra firms and survive … I’ll take the other lofty aspirations from their discography any day of the week.

*** The Fun Facts: The term sojourn means a short stay or a visit. In biblical terms sojourn means to spend a day, thus here, the Moody’s have been with us for seven days, perhaps auspiciously defining their own period of creation

It would seem all versions of this are gatefold, so no need to add to format. It is mentioned in Notes.

This album should show Gatefold in the Format section. Will upload additional photos.
