It all started in 1982. The Quest for Harrogate, finding a song that would represent The Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in Harrogate, UK. Three artists were proposed: a male singer (Bill van Dijk), a female single (Bonnie St. Claire) and a pop group (The Millionaires). Three songs were proposed, "Pierrement", "Jij en ik" and "Fantasy Island".
The latter was typical for the era: disco-style intro to attract the listener, balladesque arrangement for the versus, uptempo during the chorus and the break and ending with a big bang. Pretty much what ABBA did during their latter days. Critics may disqualify the lyrics being a children's song (about a secret place where apart of two people, nobody was supposed to come over). But hey, wasn't ABBA's worldwide renowned "Chiquitita" also written from a child's perspective...?

During the Nationals, the pairing of The Millionaires with "Fantasy Island" was highly favourite among the audience. However, two adjudication panels had their say (televoting was still a thing of the future), one voted the artist (Bill van Dijk) and another the song (Jij en ik).
Chart performance proved the audience was right, because The Millionaires made it to No. 31 while Bill van Dijk failed to chart.
Actual ESF performance proved that "Fantasy Island" by The Millionaires might have been a better choice, because Bill van Dijk ranked only No. 16 out of 18, with only 8 points. However, I don't think the song would have a chance against Nicole "Ein bisschen Frieden" ("A Little Peace"), which won ESF 1982 by a mile.

Fortunately, the song gained a second life in the version of Tight Fit, who were already familiar with covers (their "Back to the 60s" medleys, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh)"). Their version sounds less like an intimate child secret and more mature. It became a UK Top 5 hit and charted in Germany and Denmark as well. In 2010, the Almighty remix team updated the song, bringing it to a new generation.
