The Mercury Program is an American musical group composed of Dave Lebleu on drums, Sander Travisano on bass guitar, Tom Reno on guitar, and Whit Travisano on vibraphone and piano. The first three members formed a trio in August 1997 and Whit Travisano joined in late 1999. Originally based in Gainesville, FL, the band members live in different cities across the United States. The Mercury Program have a slightly jazzier emphasis and make extensive use of a Fender Rhodes, while Maserati are more rock oriented. The tunes themselves all have that late-night chillout vibe that post-rockers tend to purvey, except Wires Were Towers, where Maserati turns up the energy a notch. None of this is new or revelatory, but it is extremely well-played and highly enjoyable. Fans of Tortoise should take note of both of these bands. I love Tortoise and The Sea and Cake so having some jazzy indie rock or mathy jazz is definitely something that makes my shelves feel more complete. I love the complexity without fussiness of this record. Kevin Werkheiser. Kevin Werkheiser Super chill, great drumming, always one of my favorite instrumental albums to vibe on. Confines of Heat. Mercury Program Format: Audio CD. Maserati is also a very good band they're not necessarily one of my favorites, but on this split, they complement The Mercury Program flawlessly, and Closer Than You Know How remains one of the best songs I know for night-time-windows-down-cold-air driving. I think this record is perfectly formed and I would recommend it to anyone who's interested in instrumental music with an introspective, thoughtful, intriguing atmosphere to it.
