The Long Ryders is an American alternative country and Paisley Underground band, principally active between 1983 and 1987, who have periodically regrouped for brief reunions 2004, 2009, 2016. The group was founded by Kentucky born guitarist Sid Griffin previously of The Unclaimed with drummer Greg Sowders formerly of The Boxboys at a jam session in the notorious ON Klub in Silverlake. The other guitar player was Steve Wynn, who soon left to form The Dream Syndicate, whereupon Virginias Stephen McCarthy joined after answering a want ad in a local newspaper. I was familar with their mini-album 10-5-60 from 1983 and their last full-length album Two Twisted Tales from 1987, and I thought both were fine - especially Two Fisted Tales, which has a great sound and some very good songs. Most of the strongest tracks from this album are included here, although some good songs obviously are omitted for reasons of space. My only gripe with the compilation is that Wreck of the 809 isn't on it - my favourite Ryders track. I also thought they could have put a couple of unreleased tracks, cover versions on it - but thats being greedy . The long conversation began in the early 70s, when I was a 19-year-old undergrad at Columbia University. Back then, when the froth of my inner life came to a boil, I had no way of calming myself down and would invariably transform inner theater into street theater. One evening the play took the form of an overdose of Valium, a half-gallon of wine, a street brawl and being clubbed unconscious. Another night, it was something darker. I have come to think of profound psychological change as akin to the long slow arc of a supertanker shifting direction in mid-ocean. By increments, my relationship to Beatrice changed my relationship to myself. The rootsy sounding Long Ryders looked ready made for the new overtly rockist 80s, though a glance under the surface would have revealed more depth than standard flag waversfoot stompers. The LP itself concerns itself with the themes of lost love, drinking to forget you were drinking and the hard lives lived by those without any choice
