Yeah, if that album was released in 1962, these guys were really ahead of the game ;-)

For a long time I never bought anything from the Guess Who, although I did like the songs I've heard on the radio (this coming from person who got sick of FM rock radio). For me, I want to know more about a group than just the hits. Some groups were only able to hold up to their hits (or hit they were famous for). I discovered the Guess Who have much more to offer than their hits, and I was happy to get Canned Wheat. This is what I felt was the best Guess Who lineup with Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson, and Jim Kale. Here you get the original "No Time", which was soon rerecorded a bit differently and became a hit single and appearing on their next album, American Woman. Naturally, it's the hit single version we're all familiar with. This original has a rather strange opening, then the song kicks on in familiar territory, but with an altered guitar solo, and some added on lyrics not found on the famous hit version. "Laughing" and "Undun" are the hits on the album, I really like the latter's jazzy arrangement and use of flute. I really dig "6 A.M. or Nearer" with that nice acoustic feel. "Of a Dropping Pin" is a great rocking piece. "Key", I have some troubles with. For one thing the Biblical lyrics are a bit difficult for me to take in. I do like that nice acoustic approach which leads into some great electric guitar, but the drum solo that takes up 2/3 of this piece was a bit much (I really hate the idea of a song lasting over 10 minutes and good portion of it taken up with a drum solo. I know this could have ended up as Canned Wheat's centerpiece). "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida" and It's a Beautiful Day's "Time Is" have drum solos that clobber "Key" (but those drum solos took a much smaller portion of those songs). "Fair Warning" is basically a spoken voice in a fake Scots accent warning people not to be a star, showing that this group didn't always have to take themselves seriously. For me, this is one of my great rock discoveries, and I was surprised, you might be surprised too, drum solo on "Key" aside.
