The notes should read "Original release with the ORANGE Warner Bros label" (for some reason on this record it's more red than orange)The first UK release was [made and] distribited by Pye Records in London, presumably up until this agreement ended sometime in 1971 when the Kinney corporation entered into a joint distribution and pressing deal with CBS, and the album was then pressed with the green label with the Kinney number K 46021 in the dead wax.In common with other orange label releases and other UK releases of Warner seven arts/reprise/Elektra albums at the time, the original UK pressing sounds (to my ears) superior to the origanal US green label pressing in terms of clartity and texture and focus. There are a number of reasons why this may be the case, but I suspect it's not so much an EQ issue as a phasing issue - I suspect the US masters may have been processed in some way using the Haeco-csg device in order to sound better on AM radio. The difference is staggering rather than subtle, with the UK release so much more alive-sounding. Sometimes though, because these orange label pressings were so heavy they were prone to non-fill on track one of either side.Jerry Garcia himself was very disappointed with the [US] pressing: "Our first stereo master tapes preserved some of that quality when you had a good enough playback system to really hear; but everything that happened to it after that, the mastering - all of the things we didn't know about, the part about making discs which we neglected to learn about - that part of it, that was how we found out what doesn't go on a disc. So it was disappointing to us when the disc came out and it sounded muddy and it was terrible and we couldn't understand that all the stuff that - y'know all the stuff that we had put together so carefully didn't really get accross." (Interview - Anthem to Beauty)It appears the early UK pressings may have escaped the texture-stripping phase treatment (or whatever it was), but later UK pressings with the Kinney number on the cover sound similar to the US pressings. The album was later remixed in the early 1970s (I believe by the bass player Phil Lesh), but that's a totally different release, with different instruments in different channels, and sometimes different source material used.

In the US the Phil Lesh remix was first released with similar artwork on a white background in the early 70s, and was used on later issues with the Burbank or white labels. I agree with you - it's still one of my favourite records of all time, and this is the version I grew up listening to. It doesn't catch the delicate trippy details of the original, but there are plenty of good things about it - some of the splices between different recordings have better continuity, notably on side 2. I think Phil had a better feel for Caution, and redid it with a less experimental, more rocky feel.

Useful info; I have this 2nd UK issue, so may I assume it is the one with the Phil Lesh remix work, as per your lengthy note; should I be buying the 1st UK press instead? In any event I think this LP one of the most ambitious recordings ever put out by any rock band ...

"...a Kinney number sleeve but LP with early WS1749 green label, and *G STEREO matrix stamped in the deadwax."I have one of these too, and a number of similar UK Warner and Reprise LPs from this era. As you say, it looks like Pye handed over the stampers they had which were taken and used for a short time by CBS in Aston Clinton. Often they have a CBS-made Kinney number in the runouts as well. Obviously a stamper is only good for a limited number of records, and after that they cut their own laquers and made their own stampers (which don't quite sound the same to me). Once you have *G STEREO there you've got the good one.

I got hold of what seems to be some kind of transitional UK issue, with a Kinney number sleeve but LP with early WS1749 green label, and *G STEREO matrix stamped in the deadwax. Sounds terrific - crisp, clear and dynamic; no muddiness or phase problems. Either original stampers were used for first Kinney issues or this is just an older record in a mismatched sleeve. Any ideas?

I just aquired a copy of the 1968 original Pye distributed release and confirm it is extremely goodsounding, clear and crisp - detailed. Absolutely superior to other versions I have listened to. Well worth an investment.

Since writing this review it has been established that these first pressings with the *G matrix endings were mastered at Pye Studios by Gordon Vicary. I'm not so sure now whether the US and Canadian masters were particularly poor for the reasons given above, or whether the mastering engineers at Pye simply had a more sympathetic ear for the source material.
