The Return of the Durutti Column is the debut studio album by English band The Durutti Column. It was released in January 1980, through record label Factory. The initial two thousand copies also included a flexi-disc single with two tracks by producer Martin Hannett: First Aspect of the Same Thing and Second Aspect of the Same Thing. The original 3600 LP sleeves were made of coarse sandpaper similar to the Situationist book Mémoires, designed to scratch LPs which were placed on either side of it. Released in the glow of post-punk fervor in late-'70s Manchester, one would think Return would consist of loud, aggressive sheet-metal feedback, but that's not the way Vini Reilly works. With heavy involvement from producer Martin Hannett, who created all the synth pieces on the record as well as producing it, Reilly on Return made a quietly stunning debut, as influential down the road as his labelmates in Joy Division's effort with Unknown Pleasures. Poles apart musically, if not ideologically, Durutti Column nevertheless stands alongside Joy Division as yet another late 70's group trying desperately to avoid the cliches of a rock culture that had at the time disintegrated into facile entertainment and crass commercialism. As such, when it was initially released in 1979, The Return of the Durutti Column defied categorization
