The selections are some of the most delightful concert band music to be found. This was originally a 19 LP set of albums recorded in the late 70s and early 80s. Leonard Smith had planed it to be a 36 lp set, but sadly the project was never completed. The GEMS 5 CD set is superbly remastered by Walking Frog Records, but sadly is a very incomplete set of the selections on the 19 LPs. The liner notes are also very skimpy and inadequate. Smith conceived the Gems of the Concert Band recording project in the 1970's. The concept was a complete band concert on each album, with a total of 36 albums to be produced. Although only 19 albums were ultimately made in the series, those recordings documented the style and sound of the classic concert band era through the Detroit Concert Band as conducted by Leonard.
