The first single from the album was The Rain, The Park & Other Things, which reaching No. 2 on the Billboard pop chart. Similar in style to pop groups The Mamas & the Papas, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, The Monkees, AM Pop and sunshine pop-style pop music of the time, the Cowsills produced a family-friendly music produced by an actual family. The Cowsills were a singing group from Newport, Rhode Island specializing in what would later be defined as bubblegum pop. The band was formed in the spring of 1965 by four brothers - Barry, Bill, Bob, and John Cowsill. After their initial success, the brothers were later joined by their siblings, Susan and Paul and their mother, Barbara. Rounding out the group was remaining brother Richard, who did not sing with the group, but was assigned as road manager and advisor. Origins And Early Successes -- Originally inspired b read more. The Cowsills personify the sweet pop sounds of the Sixties and no one did it better than they did. The Rain, the Park and Other Things is the soundtrack for any boomer who remembers the Summer of Love. All of their greats are here including Hair. All the recordings are the original recordings and are that of what a 'best of' album should have, but a lot of these can be found on other compilations, usually with more songs on one CD. They wrote most of their own songs, played their own instruments, and sang with assured and beautiful voices. They wrote songs about social issues, tackled religious themes, and dipped a toe pinky toe into psychedelia, and when they were given a song by an outside writer they made it a smash hit. Although I don't have any documentation to authenticate when "The Best of the Cowsills" was released, I know I held the record in my hands in 1968. It was at a Christmas party that year. How can I be assured it was at a Christmas party during 1968? The answer is that I was fifteen years old and was not much of a party goer. This was certainly the only party I went to at that time of the year. I had read about the band and asked if they would play the record. I do know that the LP did not hit the charts until around the middle of January of 1969 which could be the cause of the confusion as to when it was released. I know that it was probably a space of nearly a month between the time I saw and held the album in my hand and when it debuted on Billboard's top 200 charts. However, a month is not that long, at all. If there had been two months between the release and the debut, the release date could be called into question. But just one month is another thing altogether.
