Struck by the melodic influences of vintage gospel music in the songs of Bob Dylan, Adler was inspired to bring together some of the best session vocalists in California - nearly all of whom had a background in gospel - and make an album that cast some of Dylan's best-known songs in a brand new light. Dylan's Gospel is the only studio album by The Brothers & Sisters of L. a group of vocalists working as session musicians in the Los Angeles, California area during the album's recording in June 1969. The Brothers & Sisters of L. was organized by Lou Adler specifically to record the album, which consists of gospel music-style covers of Bob Dylan songs. Members of the group included Merry Clayton and Gloria Jones. The album was first released in 1969 by Adler's own Ode Records label. It was. The Brothers and Sisters weren't a band per se, but a one-off project helmed by producer and music-biz legend Lou Adler. The dubious idea: Gather L. s finest background singers into a makeshift Baptist-style gospel-soul choir to cover classic Dylan songs. The result: a largely ignored but delicious 1969 LP, now reissued. Two of the most dazzling moments come from 20 Feet From Stardom star and Gimme Shelter vocalist Merry Clayton, who fires up The Mighty Quinn and The Times They Are A-Changin'.
