Shelter is an album by the Brand New Heavies that was released in 1997. It is the only album by the group with Siedah Garrett as a member. Garrett had joined the Brand New Heavies in 1996, but left in early 1998 to concentrate on her own songwriting. By the time the Brand New Heavies released Shelter in 1997, urban R&B was shifting toward the more organic grooves that they helped pioneer in the early '90s. Although the Heavies were into acid jazz as well, they smoothed over many of the experimental elements of their music in the mid-'90s, leaving behind a seductive, earthy, and jazzy variation of urban soul. That provided the foundation for Shelter, their first album featuring Siedah Garrett as lead singer. This was the Heavies' first album without N'Dea Davenport on lead vocals, with the exception of the all-hip-hop Heavy Rhyme Experience: Volume 1. For Shelter, the band recruited Siedah Garrett already a polished singersongwriter, best known for duetting with Michael Jackson on I Just Cant Stop Loving You and penning his anthemic hit Man In The Mirror. Original member Jan Kincaid even takes a refreshing turn on lead vocals with their title track, the single Shelter.
