Carry on up the Charts: The Best of The Beautiful South is an album by English Alternative rock band The Beautiful South. It is the group's fifth album and their first greatest hits collection. It was a major commercial success, reaching number one in the UK Albums Chart and going on to become the second biggest selling album of 1994. Carry on up the Charts was released in November 1994, the same year as the band's previous album Miaow, with its only single, One Last Love Song, being released in. The success was surprising, because while the Beautiful South had been modestly popular, their last few albums were sliding down the charts. However, their hits collection, Carry On Up the Charts, flew to number one and stayed there for weeks. It's nothing more than all their singles, yet compiled together they make the most convincing case for the Beautiful South's sly, cynical sophisticated pop. Album 1994 14 Songs. Music Videos. The band was put together by lead singer, Paul Heaton, and drummer, Dave Hemingway. They were joined by Sean Welch Bass, Dave Stead Drums and Dave Rotheray Guitar. Rotheray also co-writes the songs with Heaton. This set-up helped to characterise the bittersweet kitchen sink dramas played out in Heaton's often read more. The Beautiful South were formed from the ashes of The Housemartins in 1989. Paul Heaton and David Hemmingway decided, in the wake of the break-up of their previous group, to form a new group almost immediately, choosing their new name as a sarcastic riposte to the reputation of the housemartins as boring, downbeat Northerners the same reputation that had blighted their most clear influence, The Smiths. The assembled a line-up and released their first single within a year. This compilation was released in 1994, following four full-lengths. Although they'd always been a successful group .
