Fear of God is an album by New Zealand band The Bats, released in 1991. It was their first album to be distributed by Mammoth. The tracks The Black and the Blue and Boogey Man were released as singles, and the album peaked at 43 in the New Zealand charts. Trouser Press wrote that thanks in part to producer Nicholas Sansano Sonic Youth, Public Enemy, the album dissipates the cloudiness hovering over the Bats' earlier work which was never an entirely bad thing, while respecting the crisp. It's that lyrical element which so often distinguishes the Bats from other acts, combining images that are just cutting enough to make a listener stop and think rather than simply sing along, easy as that is to do. Dancing as the Boat Goes Down, with guest performances on viola, You Know We Shouldn't, an invocation of secrets and feelings best kept unspoken, and the slightly more rocking title track are three more of the highlights in that area.
