Familiars is the fifth studio album by American indie rock group The Antlers. It was released on June 16, 2014, by Transgressive Records in the United Kingdom and on June 17, 2014, by ANTI- in the United States. The album was preceded by the singles Palace and Hotel. In an interview with Pitchfork Media, Silberman explained the concept of Familiars stating, I was trying to understand attachment in this record. We get attached to our memories, to our ideas of who we are, of who other people are. Familiars is an introspective album that explores lead singer Peter Silbermans relationship with himself and his past. Many characters addressed in second and third person this and other songs on Familiars are characterized as his doppelganger or doubles. The theme of externalizing internal struggles as physical characters is evident in both the title and the mirrored twin angels on the cover art of the album. A familiar is a mythical creature philosopher Pierre A. Riffard describes it as: the double, the alter-ego, of an individual. It does not look like the individual concerned. Even thoug. Familiars, the fourth album from Brooklyn-based indiechamberelectronic trio Antlers, comes as a glacially slow step in the slow-moving progress that marked both their death-themed 2009 breakthrough album Hospice and its more electronica-leaning 2011 follow-up, Burst Apart. The nine songs here are sprawling pocket symphonies, longer songs brimming over with the horn arrangements that were just hinted at on previous work, if a little lighter on airy keyboards and Boards of Canada-influenced dreaminess. On their fifth album, the Brooklyn three-piece opt for something a bit unfamiliar: The nine tracks are grounded in jazzier, spacier arrangements, filled out with trumpets, trombones, cellos and upright bass. It's a perfect fit for singer-guitarist Peter Silberman, who spins haunting tales of delusion, paranoia and self-loathing on eerie songs like Doppelganger, Hotel and Director, reaching new stages of self-awareness and sadness. Emotion has always been this band's definite strong suit Familiars finds the Antlers on a new, magnificent level of he. Album 2014 9 Songs. The Antlers. Alternative . Release date: 16 June 2014. Country: United States. Album Of The Week. The manner in which The Antlers have nudged themselves towards indie rocks very top tier has made for a fascinating watch. Its certainly not unjustified Hospice provided them with the most richly-deserved breakthrough since Boxer - superficially beautiful and thematically harrowing, its tale of a doomed relationship on a cancer ward proved an ordeal to wrench yourself away from, however devastating the subject matter. Summary: The fourth album from Brooklyn indie band led by Pete Silberman was influenced by the Eastern philosophy books Silberman was reading. Buy On. Record Label: Anti
