Leonid Kogan’s ‘reference’ performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major. Although Kogan’s brilliant interpretation of the violin concerto was overshadowed during the 1960’s by other performances of the work (notably that of David Oistrakh), time has proved favourable and Kogan’s performance is now regarded as amongst the finest ever recorded – a subtle blend of masterful technical skill combined with raw emotion.

The new lacquers were cut from the original French EMI master tapes using ERC’s fully restored Lyrec Stereo Tape (Type TR18), Vintage Ortofon amplification and Lyrec valve-cutting lathe (Type SV8). The Ortofon DSS601 type cutter head was used to cut the vinyl.

The Kogan Tchaikovsky adheres to the strict ERC release artwork philosophy; each jacket has been individually hand-crafted and printed using original letter-press techniques faithful to the original sleeve.

The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 was the only concerto composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878 and is one of the best-known violin concertos. The concerto is scored for solo violin, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in A and B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, two trumpets in D, timpani and strings. The piece is in three movements: Allegro moderato D major. Canzonetta: Andante G minor. Finale: Allegro vivacissimo D major.
