Bynum is a subliminal force on his instrument. He enjoys smaller-ensemble playing within his sextet rarely do the bandmembers play together all at once. For the selections here, six are from his six-piece ensemble, and two are trio numbers. There are two covers. Taylor Ho Bynum born 1975 is a musician, composer, educator and writer. His main instrument is the cornet, but he also plays numerous similar instruments, including flugelhorn and trumpet. Bynum was born in Baltimore in 1975, and grew up in Boston. The Taylor Ho Bynum Sextets debut release, The Middle Picture, documents both live and studio performances recorded at The Rotunda in Philadelphia and New Havens Firehouse 12 over the past two years. There is much in between the pressing issues of the world and the mundane toils of the everyday, writes Bynum in the liner notes. I call it the middle picture: the pursuit of ones life goals, the search for ones true calling, the cultivation of ones personal relationships. While acknowledging the larger and smaller realities of the world, I try to focus on the middle picture, and hope. Tying together conceptual threads from his previous releases, The Middle Picture is cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum's most fully realized album to date. Making good on the promise of prior efforts, Bynum incorporates the relaxed spontaneity of his duet with drummer Tomas Fujiwara, True Events 482 Music, 2007, and the studied intricacy of his formal composing skills as featured on Other Stories Three Suites 482 Music, 2005, the debut record of his Spidermonkey Strings ensemble.
