North Carolina indie rock figureheads Superchunk were all grown up by 1997, and their sixth album, Indoor Living, found them at a particular impasse. The band had come a long way from its carefree early days of caffeinated and infectiously catchy college pop with roots in punk. Superchunk's 1997 LP Indoor Living is a moody outlier in Superchunk's great early run. A new Merge reissue includes a live performance and liner notes by bassist Laura Ballance. Indoor Living is a moody outlier in Superchunk's great early run. It's a 4 pm kind of record, a soundtrack for the moment when the sun hasn't set yet, the day is more behind us than ahead of us, and we're momentarily unsure of what to do with ourselves. Indoor Living represents a period of great maturity for Superchunk ironically, it doesn't sound like it's aged a day. The decisive answer to this discussion, however, is Superchunk. No Pocky For Kitty is a blueprint for avoiding a sophomore slump Foolish is the break-up album that wont ruin a party Come Pick Me Up is chamber pop with the stuffiness removed and Majesty Shredding is a case study in how to treat a comeback album without acting as if any time had passed at all. Pale pink and punished in style Tuning in each time your satelite smiles. Well your lips don't move, But my ears are burning. And my blush is proof, That from your window you sing Some unbelievable things A queen with several kings And I: a bird without wings. Now lying flat on your back, Counting cashmere sweaters, counting cracks. And all those slippery gents Have found their way into your air conditioning vents
