One of Sun Araw's longest efforts, the double-album equivalent Ancient Romans has tracks mostly hitting the ten-or-so-minute mark, Cameron Stallone out for extensive mind expansiveness in his own particular way. Throughout the album the sense is of rough experimentation, a kind of direct curiosity in the collision of sampled loops, echoed vocals, bursting bass, and random moments. Ancient Romans, SoCal seeker Cameron Stallones' latest LP under the Sun Araw name, is another fever dream of dub-mottled organ grind and guitar squiggle, at once elemental and futuristic. Romans proves less departure from than refinement of his 2010 breakout On Patrol, a primordially textured slow-going ooze not unlike Excepter doing Earth covers over a skipping disc of Agharta. On Romans, Stallones continues rendering colossal structures in sound, dialing the scale of its predecessor back ever-so-slightly while retaining both its massive scope and its wide-eyed searcher's gaze. Cameron Stallones, better known by his alias Sun Araw, is an American musician. Previously a member of the band Magic Lantern, he has released several albums of experimental music, including a collaboration with Jamaican reggae group The Congos. He has also worked as part of the Not Not Fun label 'supergroup' Vibes. Originally from Austin, Texas, Stallones now resides in Long Beach, California. Stallones was associated with the Not Not Fun label, and released his debut album, The Phynx, in 2008.
