Bass player Brian Cook Russian Circles, Botch, These Arms Are Snakes also joins the duo as an auxiliary member and did all the bass tracking on the bands debut album entitled The Deal. SUMAC provides a sort of middle ground for Aaron Turners mind and succeeds in blending the ideas hes carried throughout his career. The album is six tracks, though the bookends Spectral Gold and The Radiance of Being are more of a prologue and epilogue respectively. In between are 45 minutes of what might be described as a mix between Turners other projects, Old Man Gloom and now defunct Isis, though The Deal is neither as dense as Old Man Gloom nor as melodic as Isis and the album suffers slightly because it never chooses a side. Released on February 17, 2015 through Profound Lore Records and SIGE, the label Turner co-runs with wife Faith Coloccia, the album received modest success with critics, some of whom noted that the album does not provide the listener with instant gratification but prefers to explore concepts of tone and heavy-light dynamics, and at times creates a sense of unease similar to. a good horror film soundtrack. The Deal capitalizes on an energy of unease, building from moments of fractured disquiet into a tumult of guitar tones and the disjointed rhythmic patterns of drummer Nick Yacyshyn of Baptists. Its not unfamiliar territory for Turner: much of what provided Isis with its distinctive sound came from the same move from dissonant ambience into volatile culminations. That bone-rattling distinction for Cook works so well with the other two members here that its almost surprising Sumac is a new band and hasnt been around for years. The music here employs both hardcore and post-metal with careful, but unhinged abandon
