Studs Terkel lets his readers walk through the Great Depression with those whose lives were crushed as well as those who prospered. It is as thorough as a one volume oral history can be without overwhelming the reader. Each slice of life offers different elements that contribute to an astonishing tapestry. Read more. Studs Terkel's classic history of the Great Depression. In this unique re-creation of one of the most dramatic periods in modern American history, Studs Terkel recaptures the Great Depression of the 1930s in all its complexity. Hard Times is not only a gold mine of information-much of it little known-but also a fascinating interplay of memory and fact, showing how the Depression affected the lives of those who experienced it firsthand, often transforming the most bitter memories into a surprising nostalgia. Year: 2000. Hard Times contains numerous stories and anecdotes, memories and perspectives of the 1930s, the Great Depression era in American history. The stories contained in this volume do not result in a monolithic tabloid. Rather, there are contradictory perceptions and nostalgic memories by a diverse group of people. Stud Terkel wrote the history of the Great Depression though the eyes of those living it. He went around the country interviewing people. Their stories are hard to read, and when Studs Terkel writes about those who lived high on the hog, it infuriates me. Obviously, we are not all in this together, as the saying goes. At one point in this book I realized that this was a dog eat dog world, a clique that I have not heard of in years or even thought of, but one that came to mind when I read about the insurance salesman that would go door to door trying to sell insurance to people who were despera. ENGLISH LIT. Terkel spoke with all sorts of people: old and young, rich and poor, famous and not-so-famous, liberal and conservative. Hard Times is fascinating. It's one thing to read about the Great Depression in textbooks, or to hear it used as leverage in political speeches, but it's another thing entirely to read the experiences of the people who lived through it. When I think of the Depression, I think of it as being bleak for everyone. I think of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. Despite the Great Depression, Terkel managed to finish his schooling at the University of Chicago Law School. Terkel failed his first bar examination and decided not to pursue a career in law. Division Street was a best seller and was followed by Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression 1970. Two other books expanded the genre: Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do 1974 and American Dreams, Lost and Found 1980. Both poignantly reveal that, at times, many Americans felt demoralized and disillusioned by their lots in life. Working was made into a stage musical
