The Woman in the Dunes is a 2000 concept album by Steven Severin, formerly of Siouxsie and the Banshees. The album provides an alternative soundscape inspired by Hiroshi Teshigahara's 1964 film version of Japanese existentialist writer Kōbō Abe's novel The Woman in the Dunes. The Woman in the Dunes 砂の女 Suna no Onna, Sand Woman is a novel by the Japanese writer Kōbō Abe, published in 1962. It won the 1962 Yomiuri Prize for literature, and an English translation and a film adaptation appeared in 1964. 1 Plot. After missing the last bus, he is led by the villagers, in an act of apparent hospitality, to a house in the dunes that can be reached only by rope ladder. The next morning the ladder is gone and he finds he is expected to keep the house clear of sand with the woman living there, with whom he is also to produce children. Severin laid down the bass and picked up the keyboards for good back in 1998. Now his storefront is his website and he abandoned the rock stage for the more reliable studio. His compelling, cinematic compositions belie someone that tired of the over-the-top, hand waving of loud, electric guitars. Rather than overwhelm he seeks now to affect the listener, setting a serene if surreal mood.
