The delicacy of many ECM recordings can be measured via degrees, but in the case of the music conceived by pianist Stefano Bollani, those increments of hushed tones are micro dynamic, rendered as quintessentially subdued. Within a typically formatted piano-bass-drums trio, Bollani alongside bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Morten Lund can be described favorably as a cut below most groups of this type in terms of a sonic footprint. The album wraps up with a Bollani original, Joker In the Village, a wonderful interweaving of cymbal splashes and intriguing piano lines buoyed by inventive bass. But Bollani, a stylistic descendant of the American pianist Bill Evans, makes music that exudes lyrical warmth. Here he leads a trio that includes two Danes, the bassist Jesper Bodilsen and the drummer Morten Lund, and the band is both subtle and intimate. Italian star Bollani follows his excellent solo work with this trio featuring Jesper Bodilsen on bass and Morten Lund on drums. As the set progresses bass and drums exert some subtle welly, eventually forcing Bollani to press the keys a little harder. It's lovely, but you're left wanting to hear Ahmad Jamal as an antidote.
