Stanley Turrentine was a blues and R&B musician first and foremost. Stanley Turrentine is the very definition of jazzy blues, in almost any setting, with almost any backing band. His soulful sax features heavily on two of my all-time favorite jazz-blues albums: 1960's Midnight Special with organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Kenny Burrell, and 1963's Midnight Blue with, again, Burrell. Blue Hour, a 1960 session with The 3 Sounds piano trio, is cut from the same cloth. This is straight-up blues, more blues and nothing but the blues-sad and slow and absolutely searing. One of the most beautiful albums I've heard in awhile. This is unlike any other Blue Note release I own. The tempos are mostly slow and the mood is bluesy with a strong late night/early morning vibe. It might be a little too slow for some tastes but I like this a lot. Albums like this are why people shell out for fancy audiophile editions (on any format) instead of whatever common version you can find at big box stores. Get this Music Matters version if you can.
