Stan Getz Quartets - Stan Getz. Лента с персональными рекомендациями и музыкальными новинками, радио, подборки на любой вкус, удобное управление своей коллекцией. Stan Getz Quartets is an album by saxophonist Stan Getz recorded at sessions in 1949 and 1950 and first released as an LP on the Prestige label in 1955. Getz's airy approach is optimally heard on Quartets' many ballad standards. There's a Small Hotel Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart - 2:56. There are many who would see this album as background music of sorts, and when played on vinyl, I can certainly concede that aspect, yet hearing these songs live presents an entirely new standard, as the cool sound Getz was expressing here featured dynamically smooth, even beautiful mellifluous tones that were harmonically varied, yet distinct in their presentation, edging their way into becoming Stan’s signature airy and breathable sound.

That said, for me jazz artists were supposedly the first rebels, shedding the expected values and preconceived notions of music, yet so many simply flipped over standards, the hits of the day, seemingly almost competing to see who could cover a song the best, causing me to think that Getz and others weren’t as visionary as the term ‘jazz’ would suggest, content to find numbers that held an interest for them, then rolled those songs into splendid renditions that while certainly didn’t rivet one to their seats waiting for the next note, or hanging on the last phrasing, these sounds were explorative in their nature, hauntingly suggestive and able to travel a song down a well known road, yet with the scenery magically fresh and enticing.

There’s not a laziness to these actions, these renditions are more reactionary, challenging the listeners to hear something well known in a different manner, one that brought out or changed the contextual nature of the song being covered and allowing it to resonate with a bit more magic. To do this, it’s essential to display a well know song, something that people have grown not only accustomed to and think they know, and then change the presentation, even if ever so slightly to open new sonic doors, allowing the number to sound ever more desirable … where to that end, Stan Getz simply simmers with delight.

I for one, have no trouble sitting down with the album jacket, allowing myself to get lost in what’s being laid down, where a feeling of wellness fills my being, as this is music that seeps into my soul and doesn’t ride on the surface. What’s entirely bewildering here is that all of these songs were taken from sessions played between 1949 and 1950, then not released until the Prestige Record label brought them to light in 1955, where even after all that time, the music sparked and jumped … where it manages to do the same thing each time this record spins today.

*** The Vinyl: This pressing sounded great to me, and while there may be others that feel differently, allow me to suggest that the original masters were not available, and compared to the original pressing, which I also own, this surpasses that easily.
