Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics is the new album from The Soft Pink Truth Drew Daniel of Matmos. The album features appearances from Antony Hegarty Antony and the Johnsons, Terence Hannum Locrian, Jenn Wasner Wye Oak, M. Schmidt Matmos, and Owen Gaertner Horse Lords. The Soft Pink Truth was started in 2001 when legendary UK house producer Matthew Herbert challenged Drew to make a house record, resulting in the projects slyly funky debut album Do You Party, which Herbert released on his own Soundslike Records. Wonderfully daft Drew Daniel exploits black metal's potential for mickey-taking with this ludicrous set of covers of key tracks from the genre, writes Dave Simpson. Wonderfully daft The Soft Pink Truth's Drew Daniel. With its shrieked anti-Christian songs, homophobia, misogyny, corpse paint and the occasional church-burning, black metal is pop's darkest genre. However, Drew Daniel from Baltimore electronic duo Matmos has exploited the genre's vast potential for sending up. Recruiting vocalists from Anthony Hegarty to members of Wye Oak, he has reinvented the genre's classics into camp dance music, a queer travesty of electronic profanations. In 2014 The Soft Pink Truth released an album of black metal covers entitled Why Do The Heathen Rage, with the subtitle Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics. The album featured guest appearances from Anohni listed on the album as Antony Hegarty, Terence Hannum of Locrian, Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, M. Schmidt Daniel's partner in Matmos, and Owen Gardner of Horse Lords. A video for the cover of Venom's song Black Metal was released on Vimeo. Do It Quite Sloppily 12 2001. Soft Pink Missy 12 2001. PromoFunk 12 2002. The Soft Pink Truth began as a sort of dare for Daniel from the producer Matthew Herbert, who challenged the experimentalist to make a house record. Likewise, Why Do the Heathen Rage, the projects first output in a decade, began as Daniels dare for himself after DJing at Rainbow in the Dark, a monthly party for gay men, satanists and metal enthusiasts. Could he pair one obsession with another. At such moments, its tempting to praise Why Do the Heathen Rage as an expert, unapologetic sendup of black metal, a massive fuck you to a caste thats said exactly that to so many others as a matter of stylistic necessity. Summary: The second release for the solo side project of Matmos' Drew Daniel is an electronic black metal covers album. Buy On. Record Label: Thrill Jockey. Genres: PopRock, ClubDance, Black Metal. In the world of heavy music, black metal is the reprobate genre, dogged by its controversial history and a general philosophy that ranges from frightening to laughable. Putting his zany electronic spin on a handful of genre classics, Daniel has crafted a very strange record that is both a hilarious critical evaluation and a loving tribute to black metal. Why Do The Heathen Rage begins with a sinister spoken word reading of Arthur Evans' Witchcraft And The Gay Counterculture from Daniel and Antony Hegarty, and ends by mashing up Rihanna's We Found Love with harsh squalls of noise. Which isn't to say Why Do The Heathen Rage is lighthearted. Somehow, Daniel manages to remain true to the spirit of black metal and dance music and combine them in ways that fit each song, whether it's the way that Satanic Black Devotion's IDM rhythms evoke a mutation of double kickdrums or the dazzling collage of plunderphonics, house divas, vocoders, a vogue ball crew, and screaming that used to be Darkthrone's.
