Soft Hearted Scientists is a band I'd describe as one with a foundation closer to the singersongwriter and folk music traditions though, and a band that showcase an eager interest in applying psychedelic and odd sounds to their material. A few more purebred psychedelic pieces does appear too, and that a song titled At Night the Quarry Glows Like a Mothership is among them shouldn't surprise anyone. Not the best description or recommendation this album will harvest by far I suspect, but the best this old metal head is able to come up with for this particular production. Fruits de Mer Records. The acclaimed Fruits De Mer psych label two CD compilation of tracks from the first 5 albums by Soft Hearted Scientists, including the only cover version ever released by the band - a radical makeover of the theme from Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads which segues into a completely new and original end section. The music mixes psychedelia with baroque touches, and analogue electronics and seeks to create the same confusion of the senses that a prime Beach Boys track does. Plant Your Flag is swirling, colourful pop with orchestrated and spacey bits, its neutralise the doom and gloom refrain an apt description of what the song actually does. The Unholy Ghost blends eccentric whimsy with nightmarish angularity. Your Name in Flames is luxuriously arranged, with theremin and spacey vintage synths lending a dramatic sci-fi film score feel to the piece
