Scrawl: Plus, Also, Too- As female-identified garage-rock, this never attempts to glorify its ineptitude with swagger or poetry-it has the guts to make plain that ineptitude isn't so damn far from vulnerability. Too often, right, it's merely inept-tuneless and quiet instead of tuneless and loud. But when S. Hershe worries that she's turning into a slut, or wonders if she should decide not to worry, or simply sings I'm sad, I'm sad, I'm so fucking sad, her brains could break your heart. Scrawl started out on Rough Trade, a very suitable label for their scrappy folk-punk. Their formative first record sounds like a collection of demos and sometimes half-baked ideas. It might have made for a decent six-song EP, given the misguided inclusion of failures like Loser and Slut. Still, Plus, Also, Too's better moments Gutterball, Standing Around show a band with oodles of potential and strong songwriting that's as miserablist as early Throwing Muses, but more intelligible ant to-the-point. Their first album, Plus, Also, Too, was self-produced with Andy Izold and released in 1987 on the local label No Other Records. The following year the band was signed to the ill-fated Rough Trade Records U. for whom they released two albums, He's Drunk produced by Jim Rondinelli and Smallmouth produced by Gary Smith. The Whigs also recorded a cover of Ready from Scrawl's He's Drunk with Mays sharing vocals with Greg Dulli. The recording was planned as a B-side to a single which was never released the song appeared on a promotional CD The B-SidesThe Conversation and on the remastered 'Gentlemen' At 21.
