Alistair Reid Ally MacLeod 26 February 1931 1 February 2004 was a Scottish professional football player and manager. He is perhaps best known for his time as the Scotland national football team manager, including their appearance at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. MacLeod played as a left winger for Third Lanark two spells, St Mirren, Blackburn Rovers, Hibernian and Ayr United. He then managed Ayr United three spells, Aberdeen, Scotland, Motherwell, Airdrieonians and Queen of the South. Ally MacLeod dedicated his life to football as a player and as a manager. Laying the foundations at Aberdeen for years of success and building Ayr United teams that put the Honest Men on the footballing map. He raised the hopes a nation in '78 when he managed the Scottish National team at the World Cup in Argentina. A manager who always put his team out to entertain the supporters, Ally was a legend of the game. He has been sadly overlooked by the powers to be at the Scottish Football Hall of Fame and in 2014 the number of votes that Ally received would not be released. Ally MacLeod infectious enthusiasm was already legendary long before he became Scotland manager in 1977. When he was manager of Ayr United, one yarn recalled him and his assistant studying the freshly published fixture list ahead of a new season. In his autobiography, The Ally MacLeod Story, a more sober narrator looked back on the World Cup campaign and wondered whether he had generated just too much excitement. Had I raised the level of national optimism just too high. A Matter of Life and death: A History of Football in 100 Quotations is published by Head of Zeus 20. Ally MacLeod hyped up Scotland's hopes in 1978, but his squad fell short in Argentina. As it all started to unravel, Faye, his widow, says that all she wanted to do was fly out and give him a hug. You want to reach into the television and get him to button his lip, but you can't. MacLeod basked in the attention as the pied piper of Scottish football. His status as a hero to follow is perhaps best illustrated by a clip of him getting love-bombed by a group of fans as he's loading up the boot of his car before his departure for Argentina. Ally, says one Scottish youngster. See the day after your commercial, my ma bought one of they carpets
