Moments musicaux 6 for piano, D. 780 Op. 960: IV. Allegro, ma non troppo. 94: No. To my knowledge, Curzon recorded only one other Schubert sonata, that in D,D850 see my review. Like Rudolf Serkin he chose suitable tempi for the first two and final two movements. The movements contrast in tempo and mood- the final two are sunnier and more dance-like and have never been performed better,I think, than by Alicia de Larrocha in he superb Decca anthology. This Impromptu in B major is a theme with variations. The main theme resembles a theme from the incidental music that Schubert composed for the play Rosamunde, which also appears in the second movement of his 13th string quartet. The variations follow the classic pattern utilized and developed by Beethoven elements include increasing subdivision and ornamentation, and a modulation prior to a return to the tonic for the final full variation . The main section allegro assai is in 2 4 time, though, as it is largely in triplets, the effect is like 6 8 for much of the time. It soon moves to E major.
