Russian Circles Memorial Perhaps the most immediately apparent characteristic of the fifth Russian Circles album, Memorial is its wide range of emotion. Vacillating from somber-yet-soaring melodies on one track to pummeling metal heft on the next, Memorial sounds like an album with split personalities. Where one song showcases guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassistkeyboardist Brian Cook's mastery of lush melancholic melody, the next exhibits their most abrasive underground metal leaning sound, with washed-out 16th-note riffs and crushing rhythms. Chicago instrumental trio Russian Circles' fifth album, Memorial, builds off 2010's Empros, but these songs, one featuring Chelsea Wolfe, feel bigger and more polished, and somehow more intimate. It's impressive what Russian Circles can do with a basic guitar, bass, and drum setup. There are plenty of metal-leaning instrumental bands who dial up big climaxes, but you'd be hard-pressed to find one that creates such an array of textures and emotions with so little. Bassist Brian Cook also uses keyboards, and on the Chicago trio's excellent fifth album, Memorial, they bring in guest cello and violin. With their fifth album, the aptly titled Memorial, Chicago instrumentalists Russian Circles craft an album that fully, and mostly wordlessly, explores this idea of a specific, controlled space where one is supposed to let their feelings run wild. Continuing to explore the expansive and metallic sound of the brilliant Empros, the band's music seems to really capture this duality, offering up a series of tightly constructed tracks that seem to surge with catharsis and sadness, creating a musical tempest in a teapot. Russian Circles - Memorial review: Oh, another Russian Circles release Let me break out the pom-poms. This time around, one will notice that Memorial is notably more sour and darker than the bands previous efforts. After acoustic intro Memoriam , Deficit kicks things off in classic Russian Circles style, complete with layered guitars, mammoth riffs, thick bass fuzz and off-center drum fills. The slow, menacing riffs eventually speed-up and build into a choppy, cut-throat riff with explosions of guitar feedback and strings in the background. Memorial Russian Circles album. Bassist Brian Cook said that Memorial is more polarizing between heavy and soft parts than previous efforts, and that the heavy parts are much more blown out and exaggerated while the pretty moments are far more restrained, delicate, and atmospheric. Cook also described the album as being darker and more somber than previous efforts. Inspired by Pink Floyd's. 1977 album Animals, Memorial's album structure features the similarly composed introoutro songs Memoriam and Memorial to make the album start and end in the same place.
