This was the final studio album for the band, released in 1982. A lot had changed in the decade from their debut to this swansong. Glam, punk and disco had come and gone. Synthpop was the new thing, and that would dominate most of the 80s. While Avalon is not strictly a synthpop album, synths dominate it but they are used to create atmosphere. Most of Ferry's songs were now more or less 'moods' and 'textures' that were carefully and concisely sculpted into pop songs. That does not necessarily mean it's a bad thing, but it saw the end of Roxy Music experimentation. The band are still strong here though, Manzanera's guitar does more than it's fare share of percussive backing, shimmering chords and colourful solos. He's pretty much like The Edge in his approach in my opinion. He makes sounds you don't instantly recognize until you dissect them. The horns are strong too and McKay is in great blowing form, all the soprano atonal cries are still strong and stick inside your mind for a long time after you hear them. The rest of the band are session men, such as Alan Spenner on bass and Andy Newmark on drums, speaking of which, make Avalon a very percussive album. Some songs start with a rhythm box, then the main drums come in topped with all kinds of hand drums and percussion. The opening 'More Than This' is a pop classic, forever eternal, it's picked chorus laden guitar into cannot help but say "this is the 80s, hop in." Ferry's lyrics are sparse, delivered with an effortless, and sometimes slurring tone. The whole song is now the mood, the vehicle to carry the tale. Don't try to decipher the song meanings, as they may not have any. "The Space Between" is like a jam with a chanting voice, a great track with strong horns, reminiscent of and angry Motown sound. It's beat stamps on relentlessly peppered with bleeps and a funky stance. "Avalon" itself is Ferry. Ferry at a cocktail party, half merry, half in love with a pretty young thing. Ferry on a good night out. It's slow pace and confidence says he won't be leaving alone. ("Dim the lights, you can guess the rest"). "India" is a short instrumental with great electronic clatter and percussion. You can almost see the elephants and smell the spices of the bazaar. "While My Heart Is Still Beating" is a dark, moody affair with great horns and guitar from Manzanera and McKay. It's hard to hear what Ferry is saying though, between the mumbling and reverb, he sounds like a drunk priest, with a dead catchy sermon. That brings side one to a close then after flipping the platter it's the big stamp of "The Main Thing", again a funky, march-like menacing beat with little deviance. This sort of thing began on 1980s "Flesh and Blood" although it didn't work to well on that album, making it sound like the band had run out of ideas, but here it's executed far better. "Take A Chance With Me" is another great song Roxy song. The slow edgy build up is always exciting no matter how often I hear it, it's the nearest thing to old Roxy you're going to get here. The verse is strong then you get a great chorus where Ferry begs a lover to take a gamble his honest ways in love. "To Turn You On" is another delight in which the singer paints up great romantic images to woo his love interest. He will get the girl in the end I reckon. The last song is "True To Life" and it is lazy and weary as it chugs along. One of the best tracks here, it's lyric is still baffling even though you still like to sing it. Here we don't see Ferry but we feel him everywhere. His voice chopped up in a blender, pulsating and dithering in the infinite soundstage. Finally "Tara" another short instrumental features McKay soloing prettily over a synth which fades into the sound of waves on a beach. Not only was he blowing a soprano saxophone, he was also blowing the candle out. Few bands could argue with a swan song like Avalon. Few bands ever sounded remotely like Roxy Music. Avalon is a classic, don't be fooled by Bob Clearmountains clean, radio friendly production. Just sit back and let it take you away. The end.
