Album

The North Star is the debut album by Scottish singer-songwriter Roddy Frame, released on 3 November 1998 by Independiente. It features the single Reason for Living, which peaked at number 45 on the UK Singles Chart. All tracks are written by Roddy Frame. Roddy Frame vocals, guitar, bass, mandolin. Andy Claine backing vocals. Yolanda Charles bass. Claire Kenny bass. Jeremy Stacey drums. Mark Edwards keyboards, piano, organ. Luis Jardim percussion. Barriemore Barlow percussion. Roddy Frame emerges from his Aztec Camera moniker with a charming blend of jangling guitars and soulful crooning. River or Brightness is a particularly beautiful standout track, where Frame's mandolin creates poetical dense waves of charm. There's not really much sonic difference from an Aztec Camera release, as every album was basically a Roddy Frame solo affair, in that he's written almost every Aztec Camera song on his own. The North Star sounds like a self conscious return to form album after a couple of gorgeously aching but commercially ignored releases Dreamland and Frestonia. The songs are more upbeat than comes naturally to Roddy in his 30's. Roddy doesn't rock, so the result is an album of mid-tempo mush. Frame has never been confined by song structures, from his chorusless first single Just Like Gold to the meandering finger picking of Surf's High Class Music. Roddy Frame made the big decision and released his latest album under his own name without practising any changes to his ordinary, scottish pop, meaning that his decision is of little importance. More Roddy Frame is the second solo album by Scottish singersongwriter Roddy Frame, first released in the UK on 5 August 2002 via Redemption Records, and in the US on 8 October 2002 via Cooking Vinyl. Surf is notable in that every song on the album was recorded in Roddy Frame's own front room. Burhan Wazir, writing for The Observer, likened the album to Steve Earle's Train a Comin', declaring it wonderfully understated, and noting a distinct departure
