The Number of Magic was Kirk's sixth solo album-though it marked his second LP on a young Warp Records, whose identity was taking shape with the release of the seminal Artificial Intelligence series. With a focus on sound processing and a complete unwillingness to settle into one typical genre, The Number of Magic runs from ambient techno to dub to jazz to ethno-funk. "The Number Of Magic" is Richard H. Kirks second LP released on Warp Records. As with his other projects around this time (including the last 3 albums of Cabaret Voltaire) Kirk explores further the classic ambient techno style with portions of Dub and tribal world music samples. As one can possibly imagine and if we rgard that this album was released in the year 1995, one can easily imagine the typical sound of this eras IDM/Ambient influenced sound. Nevertheless the album is not so much innovative and sometimes repetitive with tracks that seem too long at some places. On the other side it's still capable to give the listener the opportunity to escape aurally to future worlds seen in such movies like "Blade Runner", "The Fifth Element" or "Cowboy Bebop". It's a good alternative for friends of The Orb or The Future Sound Of London. Listeneres of the Fax label or labels like Rising High will definitely like this album.Standout tracks and personal favourites are: "Atomic" and "Poet Saints Revolutionaries".

Is this release for warp as good as the first one ? Virtual State is one of my favourite ever albums...

Oh "Atomic", indeed !!!!!! Like a sphinx waiting for every listener daring to cruise by :) No matter the years (one day : the centuries ah ah), here time can't do wrong ...Have you heard his first Warp album ("Virtual state")? If not, just give an ear to track "World War 3". Well, guns and flowers ... with all ambiguity of such a meeting and, beyond its surreal poetry, for sure a personal experience true to Brian Eno's seminal definition of ambient : "a space to think" ...
