The album was commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada to accompany its Group of Seven retrospective show. The album has twelve pieces, most of which are instrumental music. However, snippets of recorded dialogue from the Group of Seven artists, and other contemporaneous figures such as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Mackenzie King and John Diefenbaker, are mixed in. Another slight diversion from the band's history of bent but listenable pop music, the Group of Seven release is more instrumental soundscapes, incorporating the voices of Queen Elizabeth, MacKenzie King, the Dief, and more. Although it's not representative of the rest of the group's albums, it's perhaps the most accessible album for a general audience who may not be familiar with the group's pop work. The album seems to be written, not inspired by the art, but rather by: Hey, we got a bunch of money from the National Gallery, so crank out some junk real fast and move on to something else. I was hoping to find inspiration in the music for an upcoming vacation trip to the areas of Ontario painted the the G of 7 for my photography. There is very very little in this album that conjures up mental images of the lakes, rocks and trees of the Canadian Shield.
