Im so proud of my Illustrations that Id like to burn them off. Ive tried sandpaper, acid, a knife. The sun was setting. These stories come from Bradburys vaunted collections The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man. In the mid-1970s, these two sci-fi icons got together, and the result was a pair of records, each with two stories from each book-one on each side of the album-that combine these two distinct and beloved voices from the genre. From there we move onto The Illustrated Man, and the story The Veldt. In yet another automated future home-Bradbury definitely had a running theme, as well as predicting the way many of our dwellings are going-this story follows a family trying to rip off the Band-Aid of reliance on technology, with some harrowing results. Marionettes, Inc. is a short story by American writer Ray Bradbury, originally published in Startling Stories March 1949 and later reprinted in his collection of short stories The Illustrated Man. In the story, Bradbury conjures a conflict between man and machine and depicts the human dependence on technology, a common theme for Bradbury's stories. Friends Braling and Smith take a walk one evening, much to the surprise of the latter, as Braling's wife generally tries to keep him from doing things. Braling Two, the Marionettes, Inc. robot look-alike who will take Braling's place at home while Braling goes to Rio. Braling Two declares his wish to no longer be boxed in, as well as his genuine love for Braling's wife. Braling tells Smith that this machine was created by Marionettes, Inc. Braling gives Smith the business card for this company Smith wishes to get his own look-alike and use it sparingly, for relief from his wife's attentions. Smith goes home to his wife, Nettie, and finds the money he planned to use for his own Marionette isn't all there. Ray Bradbury, author of The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451, contributed to science fiction a highly distinctive voice the now departed Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek's Mr. Spock, also contributed to science fiction a highly distinctive voice. In the mid-seventies, a pair of record albums came out that together offered a truly singular listening experience: the voice of Bradbury in the voice of Nimoy.
