The Quatuor Ebènes debut recording on Virgin Classics brings together the string quartets of the three emblematic French composers of the late 19th and early 20tb centuries: Fauré, Debussy Ébène is a French string quartet ensemble based in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. Quatuor Ébène was founded in 1999 at the Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatory in France. The group first came to international attention in 2004 when it won first prize in the string quartet category at the ARD International Music Competition, also taking the Audience Prize, two prizes for interpretation, and the Karl Klinger Foundation Prize. The following year, the group won the Belmont Prize from the Forberg. For Quatuor Ebene, their debut disc on Virgin Classics, they have recorded the three great French quartets by Ravel, Debussy, and Fauré. In the analogue era, the single string quartets by Debussy and Ravel, composed in 1893 and 1903 respectively, were an obvious and common combination, comfortably filling one LP. These days, however, they make a rather short measure for a full-price CD, and these outstanding performances by the young French group Quatuor Ébène are separated by Fauré's only work in the genre and the very last work he completed, in 1925
