Lupu was 28 when he made the earliest of these recordings, but I've never found him youthful - he's a serious artist who penetrates music with intellectual depth. I gravitated to this album after hearing sound samples of the Brahms, which struck me as forthright and even somewhat passionate. The two most prominent works on the program were both written when the composers were twenty. Born in Galați, Romania, Lupu began studying piano at the age of six. Two of his major piano teachers were Florica Musicescu, who was also the teacher of Dinu Lipatti, and Heinrich Neuhaus, who was also the teacher of Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels.
