Isla is the second studio album by Portico Quartet, released in 2009. Isla is Portico Quartets second studio album and the follow-up to Knee-Deep in the North Sea, their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album. The album saw a continuation and refinement of the live acoustic sound developed in Knee-Deep in the North Sea. While those songs were written busking, the songs for Isla were written over a period of four winter months in the bands garden shed. Reflecting this the album has a darker, more. Having created a seismic sensation in Britain with its first album, Knee Deep In The North Sea Babel, 2007-which was a Mercury Prize Album Of The Year in 2008-Portico Quartet now releases that difficult second album. Portico Quartet are an instrumental music ensemble from the UK, but nothing about them sounds overtly English. Their sound is comprised of saxophone and auxiliary percussion matched to a conventional rhythm section, yet they are not jazz. Their new album Isla comes to us courtesy of Peter Gabriels Real World label, yet any implications of this being considered world music feels too broad, generic, and undermining. Isla is also produced by John Leckie, but it has nothing to do with Public Image Ltd. XTC, or the Stone Roses. With Isla, produced by John Leckie, Portico have found their mojo: a thrumming, intensely textured and dynamic sound flowing between sax, bass, drums and hang. Looks like a wok, sounds like a steel drum. Forget the ex-buskers' Mercury-nominated debut. The subtle electronic shadowing and beefed-up bass recall EST, while the lead sax traces a Balkan Gypsy line and repetitious rhythmic measures reference Reichian minimalism without making you feel ill
