Inspired to get back to basics after the release of the Trainer retrospective, Plaid returned in 2001 with an LP of tough machine music, closer to the melancholy beatbox style of their mid-'90s singles than the rangy, dynamic sound of 1999's Rest Proof Clockwork. Double Figure further fuses the themes fans have come to expect, but feels even more warm and organic than past efforts. EYEN starts out Plaid's third album for Warp, DOUBLE FIGURE, on the right foot. The guitar work almost makes you think they're going indie, but the sonic density of the electronics reminds you otherwise. Squance is also dense, chocked full of squiggly synth lines, while Zamami is much cleaner and more ambient.
