Margaret Chardiet had this to say about her cover for the album in an interview around the time of the albums release: The artwork was conceived and executed by me, and photographed by my sister Jane. The concept comes from a very real experience where I was throwing away most of my belongings and going through old ephemera, and I found an old love letter. When I opened it, there was a pressed flower that fell onto my lap, along with a bunch of writhing maggots. They had been eating the flower. I had this sense of abandon and I just burned it all. In the harsh world that Pharmakon creates here, singing becomes an anguished wail, backbeats become ominous thrums of low-end noise, and rhythm sections are replaced by hypnotic surges of mechanical noise, making it clear to listeners that the structures they find comfort in have been corrupted there is no safe haven here. Going deeper into the album, it's hard not to feel like a character from a horror film who, despite all the warnings to turn back, presses on toward his or her grisly fate. Pharmakon's most frightening moments rarely involve a complete noise blackout. The arc Abandon takes feels deliberately mapped out, heading from an overpowering form of aggression at the start and gradually sinking into more studied material later on. Album 2013 5 Songs.
