Johannes Brahms. Christian-Markus Raiser. Peter Hurford made two discs at Ratzeburg Cathedral in Germany in 1983 and 1987. It has a remarkable modern organ by Rieger, the organ-builder who also made the fantastic instrument in Marylebone church used in Catherine Ennis's Guilmant recording on EMI. The sounds are quite similar - and thrilling. Hurford has a wonderful sense of pulse and beautifully clear articulation, so that these various works come across with remarkable freshness.
