As the Paul DesmondJim Hall quartet's recording activities gradually came to a halt by 1965, RCA Victor assembled the remains of a number of their later sessions into one last album. These are anything but leftovers, however - indeed, they constitute the best DesmondHall album since Take Ten, more varied in texture and mood, and by and large more inspired in solo content, than Bossa Antigua and Glad to Be Unhappy. The last in a string of Paul Desmond solo albums with guitarist Jim Hall and drummer Connie Kay, Easy Living collects numbers from various sessions featuring three different bassists, including Percy Heath. Thankfully, everything sounds of a piece, with Jim Hall laying down delicate webs of chords for Desmond to float over. This CD includes three bonus cuts two of which add a joyous, upbeat dimension to the set, but not the original album art, which featured a Catwoman type lounging in her pe. For starters, I'm not super familiar with Paul Desmond. I was looking to pick up a down tempo jazz LP from back in the day and bought this LP after reading a couple of reviews and sampling a couple of tracks on line. I will say two things: 1) I was NOT disappointed, and 2) Easy Living is 46 minutes of melted jazz butter.

Jim Hall is as chill as a Saturday night martini and Paul Desmond's alto sax floats through this material like a wisp of smoke. This has to be one of the most laid back jazz LP's ever recorded. The playing here is excellent. Every musician leaves plenty of open space to let notes linger and no one is stepping on anyone's toes. No crowding of notes, no rushed passages, just a solid classic jazz groove from track to track.

It's easy to see why Easy Living has made it onto top 200 all time jazz recordings lists. It's a solid, tasty, must have LP. Sit back, relax, and experience this little trip to "Coolsville". I don't think you'll be disappointed.
