Just, however, as he reached the top of the great oak stair-case, a door was flung open, two little white-robed figures appeared, and a large pillow whizzed past his head . Indeed, Lord Canterville himself, who was a man of the most punctilious honour, had felt it his duty to mention the fact to Mr. Otis when they came to discuss terms. In The Canterville Ghost Oscar Wilde's modern prose and themes, with characters like caricatures, lampoons traditional ghost stories. Audiobook Review. A terrifying ghost is haunting the ancient mansion of Canterville Chase, complete with creaking floorboards, clanking chains and gruesome disguises but the new occupants, the Otis family, seem strangely undisturbed by his presence. Deftly contrasting the conventional gothic ghost story with the pragmatism of the modern world, Wilde creates a gently comic fable of the conflict between old and new. Rupert Degass hilarious reading brings the absurdity and theatricality of the story to life. Read Oscar Wilde's book Le Fantôme de Canterville in French with parallel translation into English.
