VOLUME 23 collects tracks from Orchestra Ethiopia, an ensemble from the 1970s that relied heavily on traditional Ethiopian music to form its musical foundation. While other artists in the series took American funk, R&B, and jazz and funneled it through the prism of their homeland, and in turn created the classic Ethiopian pop sound, Orchestra Ethiopia acted as archivists and scholars of their countrys own indigenous music. Orchestra Ethiopia was an Ethiopian performing group formed in 1963 by the Egyptian-born American composer and ethnomusicologist Halim El-Dabh born 1921. The group, which was founded in Addis Ababa, comprised up to 30 traditional instrumentalists, vocalists, and dancers from many different Ethiopian regions and ethnic groups including Amhara, Tigray-Tigrinia, Oromo, Welayta, and Gimira. It was the first ensemble of its type, as these diverse instruments and ethnic groups previously had never. From 1966 to 1975 Lemma was leading and directing Orchestra Ethiopia, an orchestra with up to 30 different musicians, singers and dancers from all over Ethiopia. The ensemble disbanded after several tours to the US in 1975 because of the Derg revolution in Ethiopia. In the 1980s, Lemma came to the United States as a refugee.
