Great American Cowboy is the first album by the Western music band Sons of the San Joaquin, released in 1990. It was independently produced and distributed and primarily contains songs written by or notably recorded by the Sons of the Pioneers. It was their first and only album to contain original material penned by member Jack Hannah until 1995's From Whence Came the Cowboy. Jack Hannah vocals, rhythm guitar. American Cowboy carries a number of LeDoux's most popular songs, including Amarillo by Morning, Look at You Girl, Cadillac Ranch, Whatcha Gonna Do With a Cowboy, Workin' Man's Dollar, and Riding for a Fall. American Cowboy covers a lot of LeDoux's long career, pulling together recordings he did in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Many of the tunes on these albums are Western or cowboy-style numbers, the kind of storytelling songs about that simple way of life that LeDoux is known for. American ships began servicing California ports in the early 1800s and traded for the same materials. For the first time, ranchers had local markets for their animals. Huge roundups were held to collect cattle, and the hard-riding vaqueros controlled the chaos. Known for expert horsemanship and roping skills, vaqueros were said to only dismount for a chance to dance with pretty girls. Even branding migrated north from Mexico.
