That Total Age is the debut album of the British EBM group Nitzer Ebb released May 11, 1987 on Mute Records. After its release, it spawned the hit single Join in the Chant, which hit 9 on the US dance chart in 1987. For unknown reasons, the song Warsaw Ghetto was omitted from the original CD versions. The 2018 remastered CD corrects this and adds additional remixes. The symbols on the cover of the album stand for Force is Machine, Visions of Order, and Muscle and Hate. Formed in Chelmsford, UK when main protagonists Douglas McCarthy vocals and Bon Harris drums, programming were just 15, Nitzer Ebb cut a dynamic swathe through the electronic music and Balaeric beat scenes of the 1980s and 90s. They were electro-punks before the genre even existed, at a time when The Prodigy were not even a gleam in fellow Essex boy Liam Howlett's eye. That Total Age is the debut studio album of Nitzer Ebb. Released on 11 May, 1987, the album was prominent for its harsh industrial sounds reflective of the EBM genre it occupies, with buzzing analog synths accompanying the drum machine. The album would go on to spawn the hit single Join in the Chant. An odd detail about this album is how the CD version differs from the vinyl and cassette releases of the album. The CD omits the track Warsaw Ghetto entirely, making Violent Playground the second track rather than the third, with the rest of the album proceeding as normal. The template for Nitzer Ebb had already been established some years earlier with . s thrilling, rough-yet-clean combination of dancefloor aggression, industrial noise, and lyrical imagery and vocal stylings, suggesting a combination of fascist rally and hardcore male-bondage sex club. What the Douglas McCarthyBon Harris duo did on their first full album was to give it a distinctly English-language bent, as well as drawing on some of the further developments of EBM over time.
